December - Pack Meeting and Belt Loops

Hello, Pack 377 families!  Can you believe December is upon us already?  We hope you are planning on joining us outside at the church for a special pack meeting.  We have several boys receiving advancement awards and Order of the Arrow coming to do special presentations for those awards.  They really help teach the boys about some of the meaning of the Scouting program and it will be a great evening!  Join us at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 12th.  Please be sure your scouts are in full uniform for this special awards ceremony.

Also, please be aware of the featured belt loops for December:

Good Manners:  Cub Scouts will learn to be polite and respectful, write a thank-you note to someone who has given them something or done something nice for them, and know how to introduce two people correctly and politely.

Ice Skating:  Ice Skating is a great winter activity for Cub Scouts (believe it or not, there are a few places for ice skating here in the valley).  As they learn to ice skate, they can apply their skills to earn the Ice Skating belt loop and pin.

These are not the only belt loops and pins available, and this is not the only month these two belt loops can be earned.  Please see the link on the right side of the blog for Belt Loops and Pins Worksheets to see the full list of sports and academics belt loops the scouts are able to earn.  This is a great way for them to regularly earn recognition for things they are already doing, or for something new they have learned.  If they've already earned a particular belt loop, look at the further requirements for earning the pin.  The sports and academic pins should not be worn on the uniform, but there are many other ways those can be displayed to demonstrate the Cub Scouts' accomplishments!

Thank you to those of you who were able to join us at November's pack meeting.  It was a fun evening!  To those of who were unable to make it, please know that you were missed and that we hope to see you in December.

November - Pack Meeting and featured monthly belt loops

Hello everyone -

We are looking forward to Pack Meeting this Thursday, November 14th at 6 p.m.  We will meet in the cultural hall of the McDowell building.  The core value of the month is Citizenship: Contributing service and showing responsibility to local, state, and national communities.  Cub Scouts develop good citizenship when they are learning about respecting the flag and providing service to the community.  Our scouts will share their experience canning food for local food shelters and we will have a special guest to help with our uniform inspection and flag ceremony.  Having our Pack Meeting the week of Veteran's Day adds special meaning to the core scouting value of Citizenship.  Be sure to look at the Webelos' den's Citizenship posters!

The featured belt loops this month are Citizenship and Basketball.  Please click on the link below to access the worksheets for these belt loops.  In order for these belt loops to be awarded in December, the worksheets need to be submitted to Sis. Truitt by the end of November.

http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Cub_Scout_Worksheets

Check the calendar on the right side of the blog for den meeting and Pack Meeting information.  We are keeping this calendar as updated as possible, but if there is any question, please check with your scout's den leader.

Please plan now for December's Pack Meeting!  Order of the Arrow will be coming to do advancement ceremonies for several of our scouts.  It will be a great evening.

Cannery Service Project

We have got amazing cub scouts in our Pack!  Last Thursday, during their October break from school, a group of our boys went with a couple of fabulous moms and a few amazing leaders to the cannery.  They canned over 400 lbs. of food for local food banks.  This food will feed over 2000 people.  That is an accomplishment worth mentioning.  The boys worked hard and provided a wonderful service for others.  We are so proud of them and grateful for their willingness to give of their time to help other people.

Cannery - Service project this Thursday

This may be a double reminder for those of you who received Sister Lingard's email too, but during a school break it doesn't hurt to sometimes have an extra reminder about something on the calendar!

Please meet at the church on McDowell road this Thursday at 1:45 p.m. to carpool to the cannery for our pack service project.  We need to do two service projects a year for the Scouting Journey to Excellence award, and this is one of them.  It's also a great chance for your cub scout, and for older siblings in Young Women and Boy Scouts, to achieve some goals through providing service.

Cub Scouts do need to be in uniform.  They are representing our Pack and our ward at this service project.

Other family members, age 5 and up, are also welcome to attend and help.  We encourage the families to participate since this service project is functioning as our pack meeting for this month.

Thank you for all you do to support and be a part of our pack family!

Several items - September & October

We had a good kickoff meeting this past week.  Thank you to those of you who were able to attend.  My apologies for the late start - we do have the goal of starting on time, but some of the materials needed for an advancement ceremony were not there on time and  so there was a delay.

We are so grateful for the help we received with taking down chairs and cleaning up at the end of the pack meeting!  This followed right along with one of the main themes of our parent meeting.  It was appropriate that the pack meeting theme this month is Cooperation, because that is what we are asking for more of in our pack family.  We are all busy, and the committee needs help from our pack families in order to help the program run as well as possible.  Please arrive a few minutes early to pack meeting and help us set up.  We promise to do our best to start right on time.  Please stay after for a few minutes to help us clean up and we can all get back home a little sooner.

We will be asking for more help with pack meeting treats and with some of our big events such as Scouting for Food, Pinewood Derby and Blue & Gold Banquet.  Please watch for assignments in the coming weeks.

We will be having advancement ceremonies quarterly instead of monthly.  This helps us be able to plan more fully in advance and put more time and effort into making it a memorable experience for your scout.  Please try to let us know by the prior month's pack meeting if your scout will be eligible for advancement or other awards. That being said, belt loops are a quick, easy award that can be presented at any pack meeting.

Our October Pack Meeting happens on the 10th, during Fall Break, but for those of you who will be in town there will be a service project at the Cannery.  Families are invited to this as well.  Details will be sent out as soon as possible.  The core value of October is Responsibility.

Our November 14th pack meeting will center on the core value of Citizenship, with special attention paid to Veterans' Day.

Our next Awards Ceremonies Pack Meeting will be on December 12th.  The core value of the month is Respect.

One event we need some volunteers for right now is Round Table on Thursday, October 3rd, at the LDS Stake Center on Brown Road just past Mountain View High School.  Our pack is doing the flag ceremony and opening prayer at this leader training meeting.  It's a great opportunity for our boys to show what they know about conducting a proper flag ceremony.  Your den leaders will be asking for volunteers in den meeting this next week.  We need to be there at 6:45 p.m. and the boys should be done around 7:15 p.m.  If your scout needs to participate in a flag ceremony for one of his achievements, please be sure to let us know!

To the right on the blog page is a link for the Belt Loops requirements and worksheets.  A worksheet needs to be submitted to the Cub Master before a belt loop will be awarded.  The featured September belt loops are Weather and Soccer.

The featured belt loops in October are Computers and Golf.  You can earn any belt loop or pin any time - we just feature a couple every month to help you notice what is available.

We are looking forward to a great year!  We have wonderful Cub Scouts and we are grateful for them and for their families.  Scouting is an amazing program.  Thank you for choosing to be part of it!

Welcome our newest Bobcat to Pack 377!

It is the photographer's camera's fault (see all the denial and deflection?) that this picture is a little blurry, but it still manages to capture a great moment with our Pack's newest Bobcat and his mom.  They came to Round Table (monthly leader training meeting) for a special presentation where members of the Order of the Arrow presented Bobcat ranks to a few chosen scouts.  He will be wearing his badge temporarily pinned upside down on his uniform until he does a good deed without being asked.  Then his mom will let him know that he can turn that badge around and it will be attached to his uniform, right side up.

Please be sure to welcome Luke to our Pack and congratulate him on completing this first step in Cub Scouting!

First Summer Activity - Bashas Tour

We did five scout activities this summer and they all went great!  Just to create a feeling of suspense (not because I have anything else to do!), I will post the pictures gradually.  ;)  I'm honestly not sure if we have pictures of the last activity anyway.....

Here were the boys that came to our first June activity: a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bashas on Brown & Ellsworth.  The manager took us on the tour and the boys were wonderful - respectful, asking questions, interested in what he was saying.  We got free vanilla frappuccino samples from the Starbucks (coffee-free!) and then the manager even gave us a pizza lunch from the deli for free at the end of the tour because he was so impressed by our scouts.  It was a fun morning!

They got to walk inside one of the delivery trucks that was backed up in the loading dock - it was dark and really hot inside, but they were surprised at how big it was.

We learned that a LOT of cardboard is crushed and recycled at this store every day.  The crushing machine is pretty big.

Even though it's out of focus, this picture gives you an idea of the size of the refrigerators they have at this store.  As you can tell, they are quite cold!  The boys got to have some samples of freshly cut fruit that the store puts out for people to taste in the produce section.

"That's a lot of frosting!"  The scouts all agreed that the chocolate cake was their favorite...as they watched the lady in the bakery frosting and decorating this cake.  The bucket in front of her was full of chocolate fudge frosting.  We learned that this Bashas is one of the few in the valley that also still makes doughnuts in its bakery from scratch every morning.

They have pizza made from scratch as well, and then cooked in a brick oven.  The scouts got to custom order their pizza and see how it was all put together.  It baked while we finished our tour and was worth the wait!

Here is one last shot of the boys before we went into the store.  What a great-looking group of young men!

Summertime Activities

This post was intended to be sent in May, but somehow never happened.  So now it's an FYI about what your scout either did earn this summer, or can set a goal to earn next summer!
From meritbadge.org:
The purpose of the National Summertime Award is to encourage packs to provide a year-round program by continuing to meet during the time periods when school is out of session for several weeks or months. If a pack is in a "year-round school" (or is part of a home-school association), the pack could earn the Summertime Pack Award by having a special pack activity during those breaks.
Boys who participate in three summertime pack events (one each in June, July, and August) are eligible to receive the National Summertime Award pin.
The pin is worn on the right pocket flap of the Cub Scout Uniform, pinned onto the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award, if present. Multiple pins may be displayed for each year the award is earned.
Since the goal of the Summertime award is to have Packs continue the program through the summer, the summertime award scouts receive should match their current rank rather than the rank they are working on (ie, boys who have attained the rank of Tiger will receive the Tiger pin even though they are in a Wolf Den and working towards the Wolf rank).

Den and Pack ribbons

A pack can qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award certificate and streamer by planning and conducting three pack activities-one each in June, July, and August.
Dens with an average attendance of at least half their members at the three summer pack events will be eligible for a colorful den participation ribbon for the den flag or den doodle.

Cub Scout National Summertime Award Pins
Pin Pin # Level Earned the summer after:
14332 Tiger attaining Tiger rank (Graduating 1st grade)
14333 Wolf attaining Wolf rank (Graduating 2nd grade)
14334 Bear attaining Bear rank (Graduating 3rd grade)
14335 Webelos attaining Webelos rank (Graduating 4th grade)

Cancelled recruiting event at Zaharis

Due to the nearly complete lack of response to the previous message about doing a recruiting event at the Zaharis Elementary Meet the Teacher night, the recruiting event has been cancelled.  I only received one response and, quite honestly, that day is busy enough for me that it works just fine to remove that event from the "To Do" list.  We may plan a later event and will keep you posted.  Please stay tuned....

Recruiting event at Zaharis Elementary on Monday, August 5th

Back to school time means it's time for our pack's annual recruiting event!  We will have a table set up in the multipurpose room at Zaharis Elementary from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 5th and we need our scouts to help hand out flyers about Cub Scouts and help students find a Cub Scout pack closest to them if they're interested in attending.  This is an opportunity for each of the boys to pass off an achievement by inviting someone to attend scouts and for them to work on their public speaking skills too.  It also helps our Pack earn the Journey to Excellence Award.

There are eight 20-minute time slots available, so we will put 2-3 scouts and one parent/leader in at each time.  If you know that one time works better for you than another, please let me know ASAP and I will try to accommodate that in the schedule.  Otherwise, times will be assigned.  Personally, I know I have school meetings from 7 a.m. until around 4 p.m. that day, so I need to get this schedule set up sooner than later so I can see if I need to go straight there from school or if I will be there later.

Most of you will already be there, so we're asking for 20 more minutes of your time to help with this event.  Even if this is not your scout's school, we could still use your help and it's a good experience for your scout!

The time slots are:
4:25-4:45
4:40-5:00
4:55-5:15
5:10-5:30
5:25-5:45
5:40-6:00
5:55-6:15
6:10-6:30

Scout Camp options for families

There are several day camp options available to Cub Scouts.  For various reasons, our pack does not participate as a pack in the summer day camp at Heard Pueblo.  Scouts are welcome to register individually.

A couple of cooler weather options are Winter Day Camp (December 26-28 in 2013) and the new East Valley Day Camp (in March this year, date TBD for 2014).

If neither of these work for you, or if you would prefer as a family to be part of your scout's camping experience, here is another option in September:  http://www.campkaibab.com/    Registration opens this month.

Featured belt loops for June

Welcome to summer vacation, everyone!  With school over, be sure to read through the arrow point or compass point achievements and the belt loop choices - these will give your family some great ideas of things to do together over the summer, and provide ready solutions if a child complains that he is bored!  The featured belt loops for June are Geography and Bicycling.  There is always one featured academic belt loop and one featured sports belt loop.  This month, with the probability of family vacations in mind, we are adding an additional academic belt loop feature:  Family Travel.

Geography:  Boys can explore ahead of time the places their families may visit during summer vacation.
Bicycling:  The end of school brings free time for Cub Scouts and many hit the roads on a bicycle.  This is a good time to ensure that all boys learn the ins and outs of bicycle safety and traffic rules.  If your scout already earned the belt loop, check the link to the right to see what he needs to do to earn the Bicycling pin.

Cub Scout Geography requirements

Belt Loop Requirements

Complete these three requirements:
  1. Draw a map of your neighborhood. Show natural and manmade features. Include a key or legend of map symbols.
  2. Learn about the physical geography of your community. Identify the major landforms within 100 miles. Discuss with an adult what you learned.
  3. Use a world globe or map to locate the continents, the oceans, the equator, and the northern and southern hemispheres. Learn how longitude and latitude lines are used to locate a site.

Cub Scout Bicycling requirements

Belt Loop Requirements

Complete these three requirements:
  1. Explain the rules of safe bicycling to your den leader or adult partner.
  2. Demonstrate how to wear the proper safety equipment for bicycling.
  3. Show how to ride a bike safely. Ride for at least half an hour with an adult partner, your family, or den.

Cub Scout Family Travel requirements

Belt Loop Requirements

Complete these three requirements:
  1. Make a list of things you would take on a threeday trip with your family, then pack these items in a bag or suitcase.
  2. With an adult’s help, figure out the cost and miles to complete a trip to a place of interest using the family car or public transportation.
  3. Research at least five places to visit during a trip to a place of interest. Explain what you learned to your family.

Featured belt loops for May

Check the link to the right to see details on the Academics and Sports belt loops and pins this month.  These are a fun way for your scout to earn achievements while he's working toward his next rank advancement.  These can also be earned before your scout has earned a rank advancement.  The Cub Scouts Academics and Sports program is a great way to help fulfill the aims of Scouting -- building character, developing citizenship, and encouraging mental and physical fitness.  Here is a summary of this month's featured belt loops and pins:

** Nutrition:  Eating a balanced diet means eating foods that are good for you and that give your body the vitamins and other nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

** Physical Fitness:  Being in good physical condition will serve boys well today and in their future.  Encourage your scout to earn the Physical Fitness belt loop and pin.

Sports & Academics - Belt Loops and Pins

Here is a great link to worksheets for the Academic & Sports Belt Loops and Pins.  This will help you have a printed detail of what is needed for each belt loop/pin, and it will also help us to track your scout's achievements when you turn in a worksheet to show what your scout has completed.  If you're just working on the belt loop, you only need to print page 1.  If you're working on the pin, then print page 2.  Not all of the worksheet pages are needed to show what your scout has completed.

This also is a good "all in one place" resource to see what the categories are for the belt loops and pins - you may be surprised to see that so many of them are things that your scout is already doing.  You can also plan ahead for summer and fall sports such as swimming and soccer, as well as academic areas such as reading/writing and computer games.  Check it all out here:

Featured belt loops in April

Each month we will be featuring a couple of the belt loops that can be earned by our cub scouts. There are academic belt loops and sports belt loops. Here are the features for April:

Skateboarding: http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/CubScouts/CubScouts/UniformsAndAwards/sanda/skateboard.aspx

Reading and Writing: http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/CubScouts/CubScouts/UniformsAndAwards/sanda/reading.aspx

Check the council website calendar for information about a Skateboarding belt loop clinic that is offered twice a month at Extreme Air.
Also, as you plan some activities for summer, look into the reading programs offered by libraries, schools, and other organizations to help your scout earn his Reading & Writing belt loop.

Once you have the belt loops, start planning for the pins. These awards are an easy and fun way to earn achievements and stay busy over the summer!

March

Spring break throws an interesting kink into the pack schedules, so please be sure to check back on the blog often and stay in touch with your den leaders about meeting schedules. A few changes: We were planning to have pack meeting on the 28th in order to not conflict with spring break, but that left us conflicting with the RS birthday dinner. So...for those of you who are going to be in town the Thursday of spring break (the 14th), please pack up a picnic and come meet us at Red Mountain Park at 5:30 p.m. for a casual pack meeting. The value this month is Compassion, and we're going to learn about some of the challenges some people face as we send the scouts through a "Differences Awareness Trail." Perhaps we'll make it a contest between parents and scouts....either way we're going to enjoy the outdoors, have a good time, and get some things done! Please reply to the poll on the right letting us know if you are in town that day. Thank you!

February calendar

We have just been informed of a schedule change that will affect our meeting schedules. Apparently in this calendar year we are assigned the SECOND Thursday of each month for our pack meeting. However, because of plans already in place - and the fact that the second Thursday in February is Valentine's Day and the second Thursday in March is during spring break - we are going to stay with the fourth Thursday schedule for our February and March pack meetings. The only thing that may affect March is if the Relief Society has an activity planned for the fourth Thursday. We are checking on that and will keep you informed. So stay tuned for confirmation of the plans in March, and following months, but please add the following dates to your calendars for February: Saturday, February 2nd: Scouting for Food - Meet at the church at 9 a.m. in full uniform. We will divide into teams with the boy scouts to pick up food donations. They will be dropped off at the stake center. We should be done by 10:30 a.m. February 13th and 20th: Wolf den meetings - Den leaders will inform you of details. February 14th and 21st: Bear den meetings - Den leaders will inform you of details. Saturday, February 23rd: Scout-O-Rama - The den leaders and moms are being asked to attend the Stake Women's Conference this day, so this event is for the dads and their scouts. It is taking place in conjunction with the Outdoor Expo at Cardinals Stadium. This is a really fun activity for the scouts, and because of the Outdoor Expo right next door, it will also be fun for the dads. Please let us know if you'd like to go and are willing to carpool. Scouts get in free in uniform. February 28th: Pack Meeting - Blue & Gold, 6:30 p.m. in the Relief Society room. We will be sending invitations and emails with food assignments within the next couple of weeks. Since we are celebrating the birthday of Cub Scouting, it's going to be a party!

January Pack Meeting

Pack Meeting is January 24th, the Thursday of next week, at 6:30 p.m. Two people from the Order of the Arrow are coming to help with a few advancement ceremonies, one of which is the Arrow of Light. Due to the nature of this ceremony, we are planning on meeting outside, in the east parking lot of the McDowell ward building, so please dress warmly!! If there is extreme weather we will move inside, but these ceremonies are really quite fun outdoors. We will especially want to be sure to keep small children close by and bundled up. If you have an outdoor fire pit that you would be willing to set up for some extra warmth (and to help us with warming up the treat for the evening), please let me know. We have also been offered the use of some outdoor heaters (I'm not sure of the exact name for them - but they're kind of like the ones you see on restaurant patios), but we need some help picking them up and getting them to the church that evening. Is there anyone with a truck that would be willing to help with this around 5:30 that evening? The other part of the evening we're looking for help with is photography. It's great for these boys to have pictures commemorating their achievements and difficult for the parents and leaders involved to always get a picture in the moment. If you would be willing to help take some pictures (especially if you can take good "outdoors at night" pictures), please send me a message. It's going to be a fun evening! We will start with our "Early Bird Drawing" and a quick uniform inspection, give a few brief announcements and then get on with the fun. The Order of the Arrow does a great job with memorable ceremonies, so we hope to see you there!

Pinewood Derby

This morning was so much fun! We have a great group of cub scouts and they made some wonderfully creative cars - then they had a great time racing them. Here are a few pictures from my photographer, Bro. Truitt. If you have any additional pictures, please email them to me. I'd love to post them here for everyone to see.
